Deep Sea Fishing – Sodwana Bay. Sodwana Bay is well known for its marlin and sailfish as well as many other game fish such as giant kingfish, barracuda and dorado. Sodwana Bay has one of the best Fishing hot spots in the world in my opinion – part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site – Deep beautiful Blue waters makes this the ideal place for any fisherman, with a variety of big game fish like Giant kingfish, barracuda and Dorado and Bill fish such as: Blue Martin, Striped Marlin, Sail Fish and many more all make their way through the Sodwana Bay coast line. Most Fishermen make their way to Sodwana Bay through out the months of November to May each year. Although you can fish any time of the year. There are also a variety of Fishermen Sports and Competitions through out the year.
With a recording of over 520 different species of birds throughout the iSimangaliso wetland park, this is truly a bird watchers paradise. uMkhuze game reserve offers 420 of the 526 types of bird species across the park. Wetland parks are renowned for their bird diversity, attracting hundreds of birds each day, uMkhuze is no different, with a wide variety of birds such as storks, flamingo and the only known pelican nesting grounds in South Africa. Check out Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game reserve for big five animal tourist attractions!
Turtle Tours – iSimangaliso Wetland Park If you are planning a trip to Sodwana Bay during the months November through to March, be sure to find out about this exciting activity. Every year from early November mommy Leather Back and Loggerhead turtles come to lay and nest their eggs. She will will lay between 80 -100 eggs in a single nest. After that it can take up to 70 days for the babies to hatch. Meaning hatching time can start anywhere between January and March. After that the baby turtles will have to make their tedious journey back the ocean, battling ghost crabs, jackals, etc. The Wetland Park have been working to conserve and help the turtle population grow again for almost 50 years as most of us know most Turtle species are endangered, due to habitat loss and by accident been caught in fisher nets.
What animal lover does not love Horse Riding, especially on the beach or take a game ride? How romantic wont that be to ride on a horse along the shore side or through a magical forest. Of course this is something both partners will have to be in consensus with. Although this particular activity is not widely proclaimed like other sports such as Scuba Diving and Snorkeling there are a hand full of small businesses that do offer game and beach tours via Horse Back riding. Although we only recently found out about this activity – so have not tried it out ourselves yet. It sounds like it could be a wonderful experience. Research says that some of these businesses who offer these tours will pair you up with a horse according to what experience you have in Horse Back riding. Meaning if you never road a horse before they will most likely pair you up with a very gentle and possibly slower horse. While more experienced riders will be able to ride not such gentle horses or more experienced “Spunky” horses. We will give an update on what our experiences were like once we try this activity ourselves. Check out the iSimangaliso Wetland Park for more information. Have you tried this activity? Send us an email with the company you chose and what your experience was like, maybe add a photo or video and we might just add it to our website and you could even appear on our youtube channel. info@sodwanabayinformation.co.za
