Second scuba diving tragedy in a week strikes the south coast of England
A second scuba diver has died in the English Channel in the space of a week after the search for a diver missing off the South Coast of England was called off over the weekend.
A search was launched by HM Coastguard, accompanied by lifeboat crews from the nearby towns of Eastbourne and Newhaven, at around 12:45 pm on Saturday, 13 July after reports that a diver had gone missing off Beachy Head, East Sussex. Sussex Police were also called to assist.
The search was conducted approximately 5 miles (8km) west of the location a diver was recovered from the water by helicopter on Monday, 8 July, but was called off late on Saturday evening after the missing diver could not be located.
‘There was a search yesterday for a missing diver off Beachy Head,’ said a spokesperson from HM Coastguard. ‘Despite extensive searches throughout the day and night, the search for the missing diver was called off last night with nothing found.’
A spokesperson from the Sussex Police Force said: ‘We assisted emergency services in the search for a diver in difficulty in the sea off the coast of Eastbourne on Saturday, July 13. Any further updates will be provided in due course.’
