To become a skipper, you will need to log a minimum of 50 hours strictly at sea, which should be supervised and signed by a certified skipper license holder. The requirements for obtaining a skipper’s license in South Africa include a minimum age of 16, valid identification proof, 2/4 passport-sized photos, a previous skipper’s certificate (if any), a certificate of medical fitness, passing the relevant skipper exam, and a copy of the skipper’s ID who supervised you and signed you off. In South Africa, the SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) is responsible for issuing skipper’s licenses. If you are a foreigner visiting South Africa and have a valid RYA or any other globally recognized skipping license, you may not need a skipper’s license.
